义类词典的理论源头可以追溯到古希腊语法学家、历史学家Philo of Byblos（又名Hernnius Philon？64―141）的On Synonyms（《论同义词》）以及Ammonius Grammaticus由此缩写而成的On the Differences of Synonymous Expressions（《论同义表达法的区别》）。Philo of Byblos也是世界上第一本类似“同义词词林”的参考书的编者，该书实际上是根据范畴编排的科技作家及其作品和城市与其著名市民名称的汇编。真正接近当代义类词典的当属法国语法学家Gabriel Girard（1677―1748）的La justesse de la langue franaise（《法语精准词典》，1718）以及据此出版的Synonymes franais（《法语同义词词典》，1736）。英语义类词典的源头可以追溯到七八世纪的词集，如The Leiden Glossary（《莱登词集》）。
